Problem solving module
Evidence summary
|
Problem solving is a behaviour in its own right and goes beyond the acquisition of information and skills. Problem solving is defined as a process that involves: identifying the problem; generating alternative solutions; selecting a solution (decision making); implementing the solution; and evaluating the outcome. This process of problem solving is commonly used in diabetes self management education (DSME) to achieve behaviour change in each of the self care behaviour areas. There is some evidence to support a positive association between problem solving and reported improvements in HbA1c and selected self care behaviours (diet, exercise, SBGM, medication adherence) in adults. There is little evidence to guide problem solving interventions for hyper and hypoglycaemia management or sick day management.1 While there is not good evidence to guide how best problem solving should be taught or incorporated into DSME programs, there is some evidence to support the use of problem solving in association with specific self care behaviours.1 |
