Clinical management referral point
All people with diabetes should see a dietitian for individual dietary advice. This module does not provide comprehensive nutrition education but starts people on a path to healthy eating. Those to consider referring to a dietitian include those who have nutrition related risk factors for the development of diabetes related complications (excess weight, hyperlipidaemia, hypertension, persistent hyperglycaemia, microalbuminuria); those who have co-morbidities that may impact on nutrition status; those who have gastrointestinal issues such as coeliac disease, irritable bowel syndrome, those who have significant food allergies, and those whose life-stage has specific nutrition requirements 5 .
